Marcio Resende
Marcio Resende was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 23, 1961. He began playing the flute at age seven and performed his first amateur musical show when he was sixteen with the band Semente that featured himself alongside Mario Adnet, Zé Luis Oliveira, and Claudio Nucci. His first professional show was with Nana Caymmi, the daughter of Dorival Caymmi.
In 1981, Resende traveled to Boston, MA, to begin his musical studies at Berklee College of Music. He transferred to New England Conservatory one year later, studying with Jimmy Giuffre, George Russel, Joe Allard, Dr. William Thomas McKinley, John McNeil, Jack Rilley, and George Garzone, and graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. In Boston, Resende performed with established jazz musicians such as Aydin Esen, Brian Bromberg, Dave Douglas, Dave Kikowsky, Dave Mann, Rachel “Z” Nicolazzo, Bruce Cox, Kain Eckhart, Ed Uribe, Marcelo Peliterri, Nana Vasconcelos, Miroslav Vitous, George Garzone, and Baron Brown, among others, before moving to New York in 1987 to begin Doctoral studies at New York University. While in New York, he studied with Joe Lovano, Jim McNeely, and Don Cherry, before returning to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Resende currently teaches Jazz Harmony and Saxophone at the Universidade Estaual do Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil, where he has lived since 1998.
Marcio Resende has performed in numerous Jazz festivals throughout Brazil and Latin America as both a leader and sideman and has recorded and performed with Toninho Horta, Wilson Simonal, Elza Soares, Belchior, Ednardo, Mario Adnet, Claudio Nucci, Alexandre Carvalho, Lula Galvao, Jorge Helder, Joey Calderazzo, Matt Darriau, Ze Menezes, Dominguinhos, among many others. In 1994, he opened for Joe Zawinal and, in 2019, he performed with the band Run n’ Fly in New York City, alongside Sandro Albert, Cindy Mizelle, Darryl Tookes, Angela Clemons, Bashiri Johnson, among others.
Resende has recorded two albums as a leader: New Bossa and Tutys, and is in the process of finishing his third solo album that features Toninho Horta, Sandro Albert, Jorge Helder, Helio Alves, and Marcos Costa. The concept for his latest project, produced by Sandro Albert, is to demonstrate the “New Bossa Nova” flavor while blending together the openness of World music; the repertoire combines American and Brazilian standards with his original compositions. The album is scheduled for release in 2020 and is currently being mixed and mastered in New York City.
