Virtuoso Alto Saxophone
After four years of college as a music major at Jersey City State College, Darryl Dixon traveled to Hollywood, California to "get his feet wet" in the business. While there he secured work as a copyist and prepared lead sheets for A&M and Motown Records. He then landed a gig with the Richard Pryor Show band at NBC in Burbank after being recommended by his then teacher, Buddy Collette, who was firmly entrenched in the Hollywood studio and soundtrack scene. After the Pryor show was canceled, he went on to tour with Patrice Rushen, working with the likes of musicians Paul Jackson, Jr., Ndugu Chancler, Charles Meeks, and James Bradley, Jr. At this point he was contacted by George Clinton to tour with Parliament Funkadelic which gave him the chance to both work with his mentors Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley and to play a much sampled solo on one of the biggest R&B hits of all time, "Flashlight". Moving back east after joining Parliament turned out to be a pivotal move because after Parliament's Earth Tour Darryl started working with Arista recording artists Quazar which morphed into Mutiny where the Chops Horn Section was formed. Six months after forming the section he asked David Watson to be the fourth piece and the rest as they say is history. They have forged a partnership that has lasted over 30 years built on mutual respect of one anothers talents and abilities and they look forward to another 30 years.
Darryl’s playing, writing and horn arrangement credits put him amongst some of the biggest and most well respected names in music, including Alicia Keys, Phil Perry, Chris Daughtry, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Kim Burrell, Jazmine Sullivan, Christina Aguilera, India Arie, Chuck Jackson, Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Patti Labelle, The O’Jays, Bob Dylan, The Police, Isaac Hayes, Luther Vandros, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Babyface, Vanessa Williams and Boyz II Men to name a few.
