Virtuoso Tenor Saxophone and Baritone Saxophone BS509

Saxophonist Dan Shaut is a Kingston, NY, native with 14 years of professional experience, as a performer and educator. He received his master’s degree in saxophone performance at the University of Maryland in 2003 and his bachelor’s in music education at Ithaca College in 2001. He has studied with Steve Mauk, Steve Brown, Chris Vadala and Dale Underwood.

For the past eight years, he has served as adjunct professor of music at the College of St. Rose in Albany and, for the past three years, in the same capacity at Ulster Community College. He has taught music majors and minors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

He spent three years as a full-time freelance musician and continues to perform professionally. Following a North American collegiate search, he was selected as a member of the Walt Disney World Saxophone Quintet in 2001, and spent that summer performing in Orlando. In summer 2002, he was the tenor sax soloist with the award-winning Starlight Orchestra at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg (VA). As a member of the Maryland Saxophone Quartet, he toured Brazil in summer 2003, where he performed with Dale Underwood; and he’s performed with Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons as well. He also appears on a 2005 recording by composer and trumpeter Rusty Dedrick.

Shaut currently directs and performs with the newly created, professional 17-piece Hudson Valley Jazz Orchestra. HVJO, though in its infancy, is quickly becoming the region’s premiere professional jazz band. HVJO‘s purpose is to introduce new audiences to America’s art form of jazz through performance and education. As director of HVJO, Shaut created the Hudson Valley Jazz Invitational which has brought over 300 jazz students together with the professional jazz musicians of HVJO and guest artist John Mosca of the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. In addition to HVJO, Shaut directs a jazz nonet and performs with the “Jazz Instructors” and the Shaut Three-O. Shaut will be heading back into the recording studio again to perform on the debut album of Bob Shaut’s saxophone quartet, Sax Life.

In the past 5 years, over 30 of Shaut’s private students have been selected for NYSSMA All-State High School Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble; NYSBDA All-State High School Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band and All-State Middle School Band; and All-County elementary, junior high and high school bands and jazz ensembles. Three of his students have been selected to perform as members in the Essentially Ellington Competition at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where they had the privilege of playing alongside the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis. In Shaut’s private music studio, his evening and weekend calendar remains full each year.
